Butterick 6636: A 1970s Pattern Review
I love looking at vintage sewing patterns, especially from the 40’s, but I wouldn’t consider making many of them unless it was for a costume party. I like vintage clothes, but I don’t want to stand out. So, I often try to look for patterns that I think would blend in well with what’s in style today. I thought this pattern from the 70’s looked modern enough.
I chose a ponte knit fabric for this dress, which was very easy to sew. I used a black invisible zipper designed for knits and some brown serger thread I already had. I was glad to use some old materials. A part of me still wishes I had bought a matching colored zipper and thread now that it’s finished, just so that it would look neater on the inside. Since I’m still new to serging, it’s not the best, and the brown thread makes it more noticeable. I also did the topstitching at a closer distance than the pattern instructed because I trimmed down the seam allowances with the serger.
The original fit of the pattern was a little too loose. It was comfortable. It just didn’t look very flattering. It looked much better after I took it in a bit on the sides. Other than that, I don’t remember making any other alterations. For reference, I normally wear a size 2 or a small. I usually size down for vintage sewing patterns.
This pattern turned out much better than I thought it would. I’m happy with it, and I would consider making it again. If I did make it again, I might reduce the flares in the skirt a little or try using a jersey knit. Overall, I’m pleased with the style, the fabric, and the quality of my sewing. Although I really haven’t sewn a lot of pieces, I do usually fail to get one of those details right.
